The Dell W50001C is the company's only 50-inch plasma television for 2005. It offers relatively standard specs compared to other units in this category, the highlight being the dual HDMI inputs. The W50001C is currently available, with a list price of $3,800. Upside: The W50001C has a native resolution of 1366x768, which means it should be able to display every detail of 720p HDTV material. It also has a built-in ATSC tuner, but no CableCard slot, so you'll be able to watch over-the-air HDTV without an external tuner, but digital cable users will still need a cable box with this TV. Its connectivity is highlighted by two component-video inputs, two HDMI inputs, a VGA-style PC input, and a stereo minijack for use with PC audio. Downside: Competition in the 50-inch plasma category is heated, with our favorite Panasonic TH-50PHD7UY and the $2,999 Vizio P50HDM setting a tough bang-for-your-buck standard. Also, the lack of a CableCard might disappoint some digital cable users, but since first-generation CableCard technology has some limitations, we wouldn't worry about it. Outlook: Earlier this year, we reviewed Dell's 42-inch plasma, the W4200HD, and we had generally positive things to say about it. If the Dell manages to improve the black-level performance of the W50001C and perhaps cuts its selling price a few hundred bucks before the holidays, it could be a very strong competitor in the 50-inch plasma category.
